A superb night of MMA action once again from the rising starts of the UK MMA scene Cage Gladiators.
Ronnie Mann showed why he is regarded as one of the top
featherweights in Britain on Saturday night when he submitted Steve
McCombe of EFR Belfast inside two minutes at Cage Gladiators VIII:
Invasion. Mann was defending his British title belt and at
first it looked like McCombe had come to mug him, as he initiated the
opening exchange and clipped with a good right hand that he clearly
felt. But Mann’s instant response was to take McCombe down and from there the traffic was all one way. Putting
McCombe on his back, Mann used punches to pressure him into turning his
back slightly. That was all the opening that the Trojan gym product
needed, as he immediately took McCombe’s back and began working for a
rear-naked choke. McCombe defended doggedly but there are few
on the domestic scene that can function well with Ronnie Mann wrapped
round their back and the Belfast fighter was no exception. Mann
found an opening wide enough to snake his arm round McCombe’s neck and
seconds later the disappointed Belfast man was tapping out. The
win puts Mann on a four-fight winning run and he may well be keen to
take that momentum into a rematch with Robbie Oliver, the Tsunami Gym
fighter who is generally acknowledged as Britain’s top featherweight
and who took a decision win over Mann last year.
